While
the story and pictures of UConn students "over-celebrating" after the NCAA basketball championship has made the rounds I think it's important that we, as NYC residents, contemplate the matter further. These are the younger brothers and sisters who will quite possibly be moving here shortly, like late May right after graduation.
It has now become ritual de rigeur for college students to riot their asses off after their team has won a national sports championship. Ohio State, Maryland, Syracuse, etc have all laid waste to burning cars and live animal mascots in recent years. Football and basketball generate the biggest and most fierce celebrations though I'm not exactly sure how the U. of Alaska-Fairbanks kids whooped it up after their sixth consecutive
NCAA Rifle title in Kentucky last month. Round of shots?
I blame Bill Clinton for all of this of course. (Well, not really but that has become standard practice these days too.) In fact, it has everything to do with morons like the UConn administration posting the "criminal" photos on their website in a Quixotic drunk-hunt. It serves to glorify the act and the only response it is likely to elicit from students is:
"holy fuckin' shit...that's awesome!!" And now the ante is raised for the next mob of Mad Dog 20/20-fueled students to start setting the local-yokels on fire or something.
While we will never have to worry about a NYC-area team winning a collegiate sports championship, we still must think about these recent grads moving to our city. Why? I dunno, but I suggest buying a beer for anyone in a school sweatshirt just to play it safe.
