Baltimore native and film director John Waters with my friend Adrienne
If there was one thing my older brothers made sure to impress upon me while growing up in Maryland then it had to be the appreciation of John Waters films. Perhaps it will make sense to some to reveal my formative years were shaped by the drug-addled perspective of a fat transvestite, Divine, and other assorted characters like Mink Stole. Our favorite from the Waters collection is Polyester, the first movie to be released in Smell-O-Vision with scratch-n-sniff cards. It gave us one of the best criminal masterminds in cinema history, The Baltimore Foot Stomper, and classic lines like:

"I got somethin' to show ya, Francine! It's long. And it's sleek. And it's powerful. It's mah new 'vette!"

"Take that lil whooore down to the massage parlor..."

"I'm gonna get an abortion and I can't WAIT!!!"

"Oh those Baltimore County public schools. God, I wish I lived in Connecticut!"

Filmed mainly in nearby Severna Park, the highlight for us was the scene with the White Gables Motel that sat right on Route 3 outside of Crofton. In much later years, when drinking age was finally reached, we would go to the Motel's adjacent bar, Gus's Hideaway Lounge and play "Dark Side of the Moon" on the jukebox in its entirety. Twice. In a row.

Bonus Baltimore Clip'er: Mayoral campaign video with a "speech" I wrote, starring John Vincent Brian Carey and Matt Hearn with special guest appearances by Geoff Danek and Chris X. Shot/edited by Dave Lahn. It might require a DIVX codec or something to view.
