Someone Call Safire, I'm About to Defend "Summering"
By Andrew Krucoff

It's a simple question really, "where do you summer?" but it's amazing how many people wanna slam this verbizing of "summer" and think it's just a jack-ass New York thing. Allow me to reference the first time I heard it used in such form:

"Then the sun disintegrates between a wall of clouds
I summer where I winter at, and no one is allowed there"

Hmm, what's that from kiddies? Oh yeah, HUSKER DU'S "CELEBRATED SUMMER" ON THE CLASSIC "NEW DAY RISING" ALBUM. Bob Mould, Minneapolis, 1985. If you can't respect that then your street cred is somewhere in Hackensack, NJ.

And thus far I've summered in the city, Montauk, Ann Arbor, MI (for real), and the Catskills. One time I even "wintered" for 3 months in South America. Loved every minute of it. This year I will be Memorial-Labor Daying at Darien, CT's Weed Beach.

In summery, I suggest no further questioning of my semantics cause I'm not afraid to get all Birthday Party "Sonny's Burning" on you and god help us if we reach that point. "Hands up, who wants to die?"
