Subject: the last of the mcnasty's

through my vast network of barback contacts, i was privy to some secret, albeit sad, news on new year's eve.

hold on to your $2 PBRs...filthy mcnasty's is closing this sunday! predictably, some idiot new owners have decided to open a more upscale (as if!) bar, making it the sixth bar to open in that space since i moved to nyc four years ago.

the implications of this dire situation are much too obvious to state, so i'll save the encomium for late sat. night when i'll right well sauced.

so stop by on sat. night, have a PBR, stay a while, listen to some dave matthews, and reminesce about the great coke deals of ronnie past.

A Commode to Filthy McNasty's - I Heart FM

We went for Golden Tee and $5 kill-the-keg Fridays, aka "Filthdays." We left with reddened eyes and on all four's, aka "filth daze." We met bartenders with small TV roles, RISD art students, Jimmy Fallon, and an entire fraternity from Colgate. We took our out-of-town brothers there to make them feel at home, if "home" means freshman year of college. It was our downtown Brother Jimmy's - without any patrons, BBQ or hot waitresses.

There was the night of a million bitch slaps which I fortunately missed. The night the manager asked us, "you guys wanna get high in the basement?" The night this same manager sequestered after-hour drinkers until 10am because of a shooting on Houston and Essex that lined the block with police and he was too worried to let anyone out until the scene was cleared. The night we showed up only to find an open-mic reading to protest the war in Iraq which was emceed by a guy with the thickest Long Island accent and his sidekick on keyboards. In the words of this evening's premiere poet: "Why, why, why, why, why, why, why?" Finally, God help us (or just me) there were nights they even served food.

Goodbye Filthy's, we knew you all too well...
