Music: The Jam - "Liza Radley"

HelloDramatic. The street theater performances I've produced, the He Said (Too Much), She Said (Fuck Off) many-series, have had an amazing ten year Off-Houston run and their glass-smashing success show no sign of ending anytime soon. Of all the females who have had rotating lead and minor roles, few have starred so brightly or dizzily as Dina of Red Bank, NJ.

Like the lyrical muse Liza Radley, she didn't fit into a small town and spent the requisite post-college years in New York gnawing through a diet of day jobs with the Museum of the City of NY and the Public Library. Oddly, she didn't quite fit in here either. Bow-winged birds often fly west and she eventually landed in San Francisco to re-nest. Maybe this time - channeling Liza's whispered wisdom, "love means nothing at all...life means nothing at all" - she'll get it right. But I'm sure she's still shitting on people's heads.

Anyway, one of our more impressive one-acts occurred the night we went to see The Fall play at Coney Island High on St Marks. It was packed and for some ridiculous reason we were wedged together directly in front of the stage. Right before the set starts (and forgive me for a recurring theme on this site) I got a rumbling from below and it wasn't the annoyed, drunk crowd around us. I was in pain and informed Dina who helped me part the sardine sea only to be rewarded with guard duty as I used one of the nastiest bathrooms on this continent.

After the crisis passed we stayed by the back bar (easier exit access) and proceeded to get wasted with some pretty surly folks. Dina was uncharacteristically out-going and busted her shell all over any takers. The obviously pissed lead singer of Chavez standing next to us yelled, "play the fuckin' GOOD songs!!" Dina looked at him for a second, turned towards a barely functioning Mark E. Smith and repeated the same call with even more lager-fueled gusto that managed to crowd-surf the sentiment all the way to the stage. I think this is one of the Great Lessons in Life: Always play your good songs.
