 Two Lower East Side eating institutions recently completed renovations: El Sombrero, in an "artist's rendering" above (that's "crappy camera phone photo" to you tech-geeks out there), and the McDonalds on Delancey and Essex. Awesome. And when I say "awesome," I mean "awesome." Final installment of the Lower East Side six-gun salute. I am making up for the lack of LES content in the last couple days by increasing the dosage with an in-depth tour of our area's fine dining establishments. Aren't you glad this theme week is almost over? And by "you" I mean you -- Bobby in Canada -- you're apparently The Other Page's only reader. You steered me towards the following NYC health inspection info because you wanted to show me that "Canada cares." That's almost sweet. Make sure to look out for my all-Canuck week in the near future. ### Perhaps you already know about the NYC Dept of Health's website and the availability of restaurant health inspections online. It's probably been dissected and displayed many times before elsewhere but this is one tricked-out pony express that ain't leaving town anytime soon. I encourage everyone to check out their favorite city spots but I offer a sampling of the Lower East Side's dishiest dirties. First course, of course is... Schiller's Liquor Bar 131 RIVINGTON STREET, NY 10002 Inspection Date: 09/29/2003 Violations were cited in the following significant area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed. 1. Cooked or prepared food is cross-contaminated. 2. Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service. 3. Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored. I think there's an omitted health violation. "Excuse me waiter, but there are too many assholes in my soup." 71 CLINTON FRESH FOOD 71 CLINTON STREET, NY 10002 Inspection Date: 09/09/2003 Violations were cited in the following significant area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed. 1. Milk or milk product undated, improperly dated or expired. 2. Evidence of, or live flies/other insects present in facility. 3. Personal cleanliness inadequate. Clean outer garments, effective hair restraint not worn. 4. Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored. That's certainly "fresh." Well, at least "dated" and "inadequate" are properly used. PINK PONY 176 LUDLOW STREET, NY 10002 Inspection Date: 02/08/2003 Failed inspection. Follow-up inspection required. Violations were cited in the following significant area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed. 1. Hot food not held at or above 140°F. 2. Cold food held above 45°F (smoked fish above 38°F) except during necessary preparation. 3. Live animal present in food storage, preparation or service area. Citation may include and is not limited to cockroaches, flies, mice, rats, cats, and dogs. Shit, that's like an interior cabin stateroom on the low rent deck in Noah's "other" ark. And last, from the Havin' a Blatz R.I.P. files... Filthy McNasty 179 ESSEX STREET, NY 10002 Inspection Date: 05/13/2003 No violations that present a threat to the public health or relate directly to factors which lead to foodborne illness were recorded at the time of this inspection. That almost makes me shed a tear. I guess they never knew about the chili-cheese dogs. And I guess bathroom cocaine use and table-smashing are not threats to public health either. But when I read this on Lockhart's Below 14th I really started to cry: Yep, I'm buying Filthy McNasty's! I used to own Liquid Lounge bar/art gallery in Hoboken, so expect this place to be art oriented and lounge-y. The name, you ask? 12 INCH BAR. The place will be decorated with album covers (ie 12 inch platters) and be kind of a listening room with DJs playing an eclectic mix. As for making the place "upscale"? Well, I do plan on making it clean (it really is a pit now, and not in a cool divey way), and painting and fixing it up, adding a solid beer and wine selection, and displaying artwork - is that too upscale? Just like my college dorm room, only it was fogged in pot smoke and I used all my 7" covers as wallpaper. (Size doesn't matter on wax, apparently.) Can we get a little Operation Ivy "Hectic" EP in the art-hizzouse?? And I assume these three "art-y" album covers are lined up for the Tipper Gore wing.
