Blow-Up "Kicking Up A Fuss" b/w "Beat The Devil"
Re-release Date: 7/25/05

Mad Magazine's first foray into film (and only attempt to break into Hollywood until their sketch comedy show) was "Up The Academy" released in 1980. Reviews of the movie are not kind, calling it an abysmal attempt to re-create the Animal House vibe, but if you had cable in the early 80's and a couple of older brothers to watch it a million times with, then you were blessed with memorable quotes that would one day help to find your college soul roommates.

Two respectfully infectious and mainly forgotten songs of the era by Blow-Up serve as bookends for the movie's mostly new wave/pop/rock soundtrack which also includes Blondie, Jonathan Richman, Ian Hunter, Cheeks, Pat Benatar, Sammy Hagar, and The Babys. Blow-Up was the creation of Jody Taylor Worth (also credited Jody Worth), son of the legendary producer Marvin Worth and currently a producer/writer for HBO's Deadwood. I assume he and his bandmates ran in the same L.A. circles as The Knack, or at least shared similar skinny-tie influences, as they were able to craft a pop sound safely equidistant from punk and rock.

It appears there was once a Blow-Up "Kicking Up A Fuss" 45 and this is my attempt to re-create it with "Beat The Devil" as a plausible, if not the actual, flipside. Both songs could have been cut in half due to their repetitive nature but that's not a setback as you'll probably want to listen to them on repeat anyway. Pop, nod, and roll.
